As the construction industry embraces sustainable and resilient design, innovative roofing systems are taking centre stage. Among the most forward-thinking solutions are blue roofs and brown biodiverse roofs, systems that not only enhance building performance but also contribute to water management, biodiversity and long-term sustainability.
Alongside STOREX Self Storage, we’re proud to be delivering projects that showcase both technologies. Acting as Construction Manager, we’re integrating these systems into our latest developments in Brentford and Loughton, setting new standards for environmentally conscious construction.
Blue Roofs at STOREX Brentford: Water Conservation and Climate Resilience
Our STOREX Self Storage project in Brentford incorporates an advanced blue roof system, designed to efficiently manage stormwater on the building’s flat roof.
Blue roofs are engineered to control water buildup by incorporating porous felt membranes below the biodiverse material layer. This allows rainwater to drain through to attenuation crate wells, the distinctive black layer, where it is temporarily stored before being released slowly into downpipes. This gradual drainage prevents water from being expelled too quickly into the sewer system, reducing pressure on urban infrastructure.
Key benefits of the blue roof system include:
- Downstream flood protection: Helps mitigate surface water runoff and provides an added layer of resilience during heavy rainfall.
- Cost-effective water management: Offers a practical alternative to large, expensive underground storage tanks, though a smaller tank is still installed at Brentford for added capacity.
- Supports long-term greenery: Maintains consistent moisture for the biodiverse roof layer, promoting healthy vegetation growth over time.
- Water conservation and sustainability: Reduces waste and supports a natural water cycle, contributing to local environmental targets.
- Thermal regulation: Helps stabilise roof temperature and improve the building’s overall energy efficiency.
Combined with the site’s PV panels, the blue roof underscores STOREX’s commitment to sustainable building design, blending technology, ecology and function in one integrated system.

Brown Biodiverse Roofs at STOREX Loughton: Enhancing Urban Ecology
At the STOREX Self Storage project in Loughton, we are delivering a brown biodiverse roof designed to encourage natural habitats and support wildlife.
Unlike traditional green roofs, brown roofs use a substrate of recycled materials such as crushed brick and concrete to replicate the conditions of natural brownfield sites. This approach supports native plant growth and provides essential habitats for pollinators, birds, and insects, creating a self-sustaining ecosystem on top of the building.
Benefits of brown biodiverse roofs:
- Boosts biodiversity: Encourages local flora and fauna to thrive in urban environments.
- Low maintenance: Promotes natural growth with minimal human intervention.
- Recycled content: Makes use of sustainable, repurposed materials.
- Improves air quality and insulation: Contributes to better air and thermal regulation.
This roof system reinforces STOREX’s mission to integrate eco-positive design into every project, helping enhance both the environmental and community value of the development.

A Sustainable Future for Construction
By implementing both blue and brown biodiverse roof systems, STOREX Self Storage is demonstrating how modern commercial buildings can align with environmental priorities, from stormwater management and biodiversity to energy efficiency and carbon reduction.
As Construction Manager, our role ensures that every detail of delivery meets the highest standards of quality, innovation and sustainability. Together, these projects reflect a clear vision: to create smarter, greener buildings that benefit both people and the planet.
