Jack Welsh is our newest apprentice and joined us in October 2024. Jack will complete a year of on-the-job training and then enrol onto a Quantity Surveying degree with the University College of Estate Management (UCEM), fully funded by Modus. As National Apprenticeship Week reaches ‘Apprentice Wednesday’ we quizzed Jack on his experience so far at Modus!
- How did you hear about the apprenticeship scheme at Modus and what made you want to get into construction?
I heard about the apprenticeship scheme at Modus through my previous employer when I used to work as a landscaper. I found interest in the construction world since I started landscaping and the more that I learnt, the more I enjoyed it.
- Tell us what sort of things you’ve done/learnt in your apprenticeship so far?
So far, I have learnt many important skills such as measuring and preparing documents and what the role of a quantity surveyor is not only in the office, but also on-site. I have learnt other skills such as communicating and presenting myself in a professional way which has had a positive impact on me outside of work.
- What have you enjoyed most about your apprenticeship so far?
During the last three months, I’ve really enjoyed learning all the basic day to day tasks that I need to know, but also constantly learning new and more advanced skills. I also really enjoyed getting involved in a recent charity initiative where we built a new garden patio area and pergola for a supported housing centre, Amber Foundation, in Ashford.
- What are you looking forward to doing during your apprenticeship with Modus?
I am looking forward to starting my UCEM University Degree Course for my apprenticeship as I feel that there is still a lot of things for me to learn, especially on the theoretical-learning side.
- Any advice for people looking to do an apprenticeship in construction?
For people who have a keen interest in construction I would definitely recommend taking up an apprenticeship as I feel that getting the hands-on experience will significantly boost your learning progress.
- What do you think the benefits of doing an apprenticeship are over just going straight to university?
Earning whilst you are learning is definitely one of the main benefits. Doing an apprenticeship not only teaches you knowledge through attending university, but also gives you real-life experience with the job and actually learning how to do the tasks that are required of the role. You are also exposed to real life experiences and situations and can learn from more senior people around you in the office.
- If you weren’t doing an apprenticeship in Quantity Surveying, what other career profession would you have chosen?
If I wasn’t doing an apprenticeship in quantity surveying with Modus, I would have liked to go to university to study Sports Management.
