Last week, we had the pleasure of welcoming Sam to our team for a week-long work experience placement 👷🏼
Throughout his time with us, Sam had the opportunity to get hands-on insight into the day-to-day life of a Quantity Surveyor, from shadowing live projects to learning how we manage costs, contracts and client relationships. We asked him some questions about how he found his week, and if we managed to lure him into the world of quantity surveying!
What initially interested you in doing work experience with a quantity surveying firm?
Initially I wanted to do some quantity surveying work experience to gauge whether I would enjoy this line of work. The mix of office work and being out on site was especially attractive to me.
What have you enjoyed the most during your week with us?
I have really enjoyed getting to know the team, as well as learning about the different sides of the role and getting hands on experience in these.
What kinds of tasks or projects did you get involved with during your time here?
During my time at Modus, they taught me basic measuring skills as well as transferring these into finishing schedules. They provided me with the skills to complete a basic Cost Plan, as well as taking me out on multiple site visits to show me the other sides of the role.
Has this placement influenced your interest in pursuing a career in construction or quantity surveying?
This week has positively influenced my view on myself in a possible role in QS in the future. I am now seriously considering this as a career path for myself, which I previously wasn’t before my time with Modus.
And lastly, if you had to describe your week in three words, what would they be?
Eye-opening, informative, fun.
